The Return of the Evil Spirit

Matthew 12:43-45

 (Luke 11.24-26)

43“When an evil spirit goes out of a person, it travels over dry country looking for a place to rest. If it can't find one, 44it says to itself, ‘I will go back to my house.’ So it goes back and finds the house empty, clean, and all fixed up. 45Then it goes out and brings along seven other spirits even worse than itself, and they come and live there. So when it is all over, that person is in worse shape than at the beginning. This is what will happen to the evil people of this day.”

-Matthew 12:43-45

Matthew 12:43-45 Explanation

The Return of the Evil Spirit

Matthew 12:43-45 uses a parable of an empty house to warn that simply

removing evil (like an exorcised demon) isn't enough; one must actively fill that

spiritual void with Christ and the Holy Spirit, or the person/generation becomes

more vulnerable, leading to a worse spiritual state, a warning Jesus applied to

the Pharisees and unbelieving Israelites who rejected Him.

The Meaning of Danger of Spiritual Emptiness

  1.  The House: Represents a person's heart or life, which becomes "empty, swept clean, and put in order" after an evil spirit leaves.
  2.  The Spirit's Return: The demon finds no new occupant and returns, bringing seven more spirits, making the final condition far worse than the first.

The Meaning of Danger of Spiritual Emptiness

 The Spirit's Return:

  • The demon finds no new occupant and returns, bringing seven more spirits, making the final condition far worse than the first.
