The Temptation of Jesus

MATTHEW 4

 (Mark 1.12,13; Luke 4.1-13)

1  Then the Spirit led Jesus into the desert to be tempted by the Devil. 2After spending forty days and nights without food, Jesus was hungry. 3Then the Devil came to him and said, “If you are God's Son, order these stones to turn into bread.”

4  But Jesus answered, “The scripture says, ‘Human beings cannot live on bread alone, but need every word that God speaks.’”

5Then the Devil took Jesus to Jerusalem, the Holy City, set him on the highest point of the Temple, 6 and said to him, “If you are God's Son, throw yourself down, for the scripture says,

‘God will give orders to his angels about you;

they will hold you up with their hands,

so that not even your feet will be hurt on the stones.’”

7  Jesus answered, “But the scripture also says, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

8Then the Devil took Jesus to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in all their greatness. 9“All this I will give you,” the Devil said, “if you kneel down and worship me.”

10  Then Jesus answered, “Go away, Satan! The scripture says, ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve only him!’”

11Then the Devil left Jesus; and angels came and helped him.

Matthew 4:1-11 Explanation

Jesus' Temptation in the Wilderness by satan

Matthew 4:1-11 describes Jesus' temptations in the wilderness by Satan after

40 days of fasting, where the devil offers worldly power, fame, and physical

comfort ), but Jesus resists each by quoting Scripture (from Deuteronomy),

proving his trust in God's provision, and ultimately refusing to worship Satan.  Demonstrating ultimate trust in God's provision and obedience to his word, refusing shortcuts, and prioritizing worship of God alone over idolatry. Each temptation (turning stones to bread, leaping from the temple, worshiping Satan for kingdoms) targets a core need (physical, spiritual, worldly), but Jesus counters with "It is written. Asserting God's Word over immediate gratification, leading the devil to depart and angels to minister to Him.

The 3 Temptations of satan

Temptation 1 Physical Hunger (Stones to Bread):

  • Satan tempted Jesus to use His power for His own physical comfort after 40 days of fasting. Jesus responded, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God'" (Deuteronomy 8:3), showing reliance on God's spiritual sustenance.

Temptation 2 Fame/Testing God (Temple Pinnacle):

  •  Satan urged Jesus to jump from the temple to prove He's God's Son, seeking glory and a miraculous sign. Jesus countered with, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test'" (Deuteronomy 6:16), refusing to manipulate God for show.

Temptation 3 Worldly Power (Kingdoms of the World):

  •  Satan offered all worldly kingdoms for worship. Jesus refused, declaring, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only'" (Deuteronomy 6:13), emphasizing sole allegiance to God.
