Not Peace, but a Sword

Matthew 10:34-39

 (Luke 12.51-53; 14.26,27)

34“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the world. No, I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35

Mic 7.6

I came to set sons against their fathers, daughters against their mothers, daughters-in-law against their mothers-in-law; 36your worst enemies will be the members of your own family.

37“Those who love their father or mother more than me are not fit to be my disciples; those who love their son or daughter more than me are not fit to be my disciples. 38

Mt 16.24; Mk 8.34; Lk 9.23

Those who do not take up their cross and follow in my steps are not fit to be my disciples. 39

Mt 16.25; Mk 8.35; Lk 9.24; 17.33; Jn 12.25

Those who try to gain their own life will lose it; but those who lose their life for my sake will gain it.

-Matthew 10:34-39

Matthew 10:34-39 Highlights

Jesus Christ on a white horse holding a sword.

According to Matthew 10:34-39, following Jesus requires great sacrifice. Following Jesus will take complete loyalty, which may cause conflict and division. Even with your family. Jesus uses the word “sword” to describe his message. To separate the believers from the non-believers. Making it clear to his apostles. The apostles must prioritize him over family relationships, personal comfort, and safety. Finding true life can only be achieved by sacrificing those things for him.

Key interpretations

"Not Peace, but a Sword"(verse.34)

  •  Jesus' message was not about being violent. Instead, his message will naturally cause division. Acting as a “sword” which separates the people who follow him and the people who reject him.

Division within Families(verse.35-36)

  • Following Jesus may cause conflict with family members who disagree or do not have the same faith.

The Ultimate Loyalty(verse.37)

  • Jesus is making it known that he should be more loved than any parent or children. The ultimate loyalty to him all above any human relationship.

Taking Up the Cross(verse.38)

  • This necessitates a commitment to sacrificial discipleship, embracing suffering and relinquishing selfish desires in order to follow Christ.

Save your Life by Losing your Life(verse.39)

  • Individuals who hold tightly to their material existence or security will forfeit genuine spiritual life. However, those who dedicate their lives to Christ will discover everlasting life.
